When Connecticut beat Butler 53-41 to win the 2010-11 NCAA men's basketball title, it marked the lowest scoring championship since 1949. Turns out, the result was a mere foreshadowing. As 2011 turned to 2012, teams were averaging a mere 67.6 points per game. If that pace continues through the end of the season, it would be the lowest average since 1982, and easily the lowest of the college shot-clock era, which began with the 1985-86 season.

Sidney Crosby's concussion during the 2010-11 NHL season turns out to be the head shot heard 'round the world -- or at least the hockey world. Get this -- with the 2011-12 season not even at the halfway point, more than 50 NHL players had already missed games with concussions or concussion-like symptoms. With some 750 players in the league, that means that 1 out of ever 15 has missed playing time because of injuries related to concussions -- with more than half of the season and the playoff still to come.

Turns out the sports world lost a major figure when North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Il died at the end of 2011. Who knew? According to the official obituary released by the North Korean Ministry of Information, the "dear leader" shot an astounding 38 under par in his very first golf outing -- including 11 holes in one. And of course, he rolled a perfect 300 on his first attempt at bowling. But here's the topper: During the 2010 World Cup, Kim provided tactical advice to the team manager during games by using an invisible cell phone that he invented himself. Who's to argue?
